blog # 6 “I realize that I’m gambling

                                   Name:  Carlos Mendez

The article “I realize that I’m gambling, “from The New York Times, Steve Huber states that medical health insurance can be under the affordable for most of the residents of The Unite States. Not only because a health insurance is no one of the priority for most families in the US, in addition, they have a tight budget and a lot expenses, but also the program is confusing for them and  people are not well informed about it. For these reasons I strongly agree with Mr. Huber that the new Obama’s law about medical insurance shouldn’t be mandatory for us and they shouldn’t punish uninsured people with monetary penalties for many reasons.

First of all, medical insurance is not a priority for people with low income and others, in my opinion a health insurance must be optional for everybody, because, sometimes we find ourselves in a bad economic situation such as unemployed or we don’t have enough for the rent, to be honest an insurance always was the last thing that I ever thought about it, in those situations because I have been through that before. For instance the example from the article, Heidi Reinberg, 53 years old, freelance documentary producer ,who lives in Brooklyn, said she had gone uninsured for most of her adult life and had managed just fine.

Another reason is that the new mandatory law about (health insurance) hasn’t been well informed to all the residents of The United States. People are confused and they rather to pay the penalty which it is $95. For instance, Ms. Reinberg, as well added up that she exercised, ate healthily and rarely got sick. She would rather pay down her credit cards than take on another bill for something that she doesn’t know that she is going to need. Even though she acknowledges that she could have major medical expenses as she ages. And she might buy insurance in the future if her income stabilizes, she said. But for now, like many others, she has decided that the financial penalty for not buying insurance is more affordable than the cost of premiums and deductibles. She knows what the penalty is going to be and she said that she could get her head around that amount.

One of the most shocking reasons is that people make decisions for us and the system is a mess. For instance the fact that after March 31, 2014, all residents of The Unites States must be heals care coverage. Governments come into our life and make these decisions for us without even asking us, in my opinion this event just makes me want to rebel to them. This has a negative impact on society, the system is a mess. Penalties are too low; people with coverage got thrown out of their plans, small Businesses are getting clobbered by premium increases and “fees" to support the ACA, confusion all around. What kind of hubris does our president have that to force something this big on the rest of us without letting the states sort it out first.

In conclusion, the new law has a lot of failures, governments should solve them all, because our country is not in a good economic position right now and residents are unable to face another expense that is not very justified, basically it’s not a priority ,because, people don’t get sick every day.  In addition many people are confused with the program; they should more advertising it, showing our society the benefits and loss about it. In my opinion is going to be harder for me because I have to think about another debt that is going to come out of my pockets , I don’t see any benefits on it however we must  follow the law ,and sure it is like gambling because we don’t know when we going to be sick.
